BYD’s introduction of the Sea Lion 5 is not only a step toward cleaner mobility but also an indicator of how South Africa’s automotive repair industry will evolve with advanced hybrid technology.
“BYD is not just a car manufacturer. We’re a technology company focused on creating a cleaner, smarter future. The Sea Lion 5 represents how innovation can meet real South African needs, combining energy efficiency, advanced safety and everyday utility,” says Nomonde Kweyi, Marketing Director, BYD Auto South Africa.
Built on BYD’s DMI (Dual-Mode Intelligent) hybrid platform, the Sea Lion 5 blends electric and combustion technology, providing an ideal transition vehicle for both motorists and local service professionals. Workshops will need to upskill to manage its hybrid systems, offering new service opportunities in diagnostics and battery maintenance.

The SUV’s design highlights include a panoramic sunroof, wireless charging, and intelligent voice control, paired with a focus on reliability and practicality for families.
BYD’s Executive Vice President, Stella Li, reaffirmed the company’s commitment to South Africa’s sustainable automotive future, with investment plans in infrastructure and skills development.
Full specifications and pricing will be revealed in November, setting the stage for more hybrid and electric models to reach local workshops soon after.
