Australian motorists are sitting on potential savings of over $2,000 each, according to new research that reveals the untapped benefits of recycled original equipment (ROE) vehicle parts.
A comprehensive survey by YouGov, commissioned by eBay Australia and Auto PARTnered Solutions, found that drivers could save an average of $2,144 over five years by switching to recycled parts – translating to a massive $15.5 billion in collective savings across the nation.
Strong Consumer Interest Despite Limited Awareness
The research reveals promising consumer sentiment, with 82% of Australian vehicle owners expressing openness to purchasing recycled auto parts. Cost remains the primary motivator, with nearly two-thirds (64%) of respondents citing savings as their main reason for considering the switch.
For owners of vehicles aged seven to 13 years, the potential savings are even more dramatic – analysis suggests they could reduce costs by up to 85% compared to new dealer parts.
Addressing Australia's Automotive Waste Crisis
Beyond personal savings, recycled parts offer a solution to a significant environmental challenge. With approximately 850,000 vehicles reaching end-of-life annually, Australia generates around 1.36 million tonnes of automotive waste each year.
The shift toward recycled parts could substantially reduce pressure on landfills while meeting genuine consumer needs. Nearly two-thirds (64%) of surveyed drivers acknowledge that choosing recycled auto parts creates a significant positive environmental impact.
Meeting Market Demand for Hard-to-Find Components
The research highlights a critical supply gap in the automotive parts market. Half of all surveyed drivers reported needing specific vehicle parts that were either discontinued or difficult to source through traditional retail channels.
This scarcity is creating robust demand for recycled alternatives and presenting opportunities for marketplace sellers to serve customers beyond just price-conscious buyers.
Interestingly, when shown images of new versus recycled parts side-by-side, 62% of respondents couldn't correctly identify which was new – demonstrating that quality differences are often imperceptible.
Building Consumer Confidence
The survey identified key factors that boost purchase confidence in recycled parts: guaranteed fitment (50%), clear warranty information (50%), and easy or free returns (49%). These assurances help buyers feel confident about quality and reliability while enjoying the convenience and cost benefits.

Industry Perspective
"We can see tremendous potential for recycled auto parts sellers, with 82% of Australian drivers open to purchasing recycled components," said Gautam Taluja, Category Manager for Car Parts & Accessories at eBay Australia. "This signals strong and widespread demand that the marketplace is well-positioned to serve."
Chris Daglis from Auto PARTnered Solutions emphasized the broader implications: "This report validates that recycled auto parts offer a compelling proposition for consumers while addressing major environmental challenges. We're dedicated to fostering the infrastructure and confidence needed for the motor industry to fully integrate sustainable practices."
The findings suggest Australia stands at the threshold of a significant shift toward circular economy principles in the automotive sector, driven by consumer demand for both cost savings and environmental responsibility.
