South Africa’s automotive repair sector is evolving rapidly, creating a growing demand for skilled technicians. Franchised dealerships are stepping up to close this gap by partnering with Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) colleges to prepare the next generation of professionals.
Maruleng Auto, in collaboration with Ehlanzeni TVET College, has been running a training programme for nearly ten years. Spearheaded by Edward Ramovha, the initiative gives students vital workplace experience that classroom learning alone cannot provide.
“Many young people finish their studies but struggle to find practical experience,” says Dealer Principal Derik Scorer. “Our workshops offer an ideal environment for these learners to apply their knowledge and develop their skills.”
The programme focuses on more than technical expertise. Learners also receive guidance on time management, professionalism, and communication, which are essential in today’s customer-focused repair industry. Dealerships like Maruleng Auto often assist with transport costs, ensuring students can fully participate in the programme.
Several trainees have gone on to secure employment at the dealership, proving the success of the initiative. “The candidates we receive from Ehlanzeni College are motivated and hardworking. They’re ready to grow in this industry,” Scorer adds.
With vehicles now incorporating advanced electronics and diagnostic technology, the need for highly trained technicians has never been greater. Partnerships between dealerships and TVET colleges are helping to build a skilled workforce capable of meeting these challenges and sustaining the repair industry for the future.
